Hello world, and welcome to Real Homemaking!
When you study programming, the first thing you learn is how to make a small program that says “Hello World!” I thought it would be fitting to have that as the opening line to my Real Homemaking blog.
Why is this relevant? Well, I started off my career as a Software Developer…
About Me
My name is Ashleigh, born in 1985 (you can do the maths). I have a B.Com degree majoring in Information Technology.
Something they don’t tell you at High School or University is that the really well paying I.T. positions tend to require extra long hours. I worked as a software developer until I decided to have children, and then I quit to be a full-time homeschooling mom and housewife.
Actually, it isn’t full time, because I do the bookkeeping for my husband’s website design business and I help him with code every now and then. He is great when it comes to design, but not so great when he has a coding problem that needs solving.
I am so grateful for all the experience I have gained from Software Development and the business world though. It has been a vital ingredient in learning time management. Sometimes I derail, but overall I think I do a pretty good job in squeezing the most into a busy day.
Why Real Homemaking?
I honestly got tired of seeing hundreds of picture perfect and Instagram ready homes on the internet. Nobody’s home is that perfect.
When you have 3 children (or more), a person is usually just surviving from day to day not making a 3 course meal every day.
And how small is a person’s house for them to get through vacuuming, dusting and mopping the whole house in just 1 or 2 hours? It takes me 5 minutes just to get the vacuum out, another 5 to put it away and probably 2 to 3 minutes to move it between rooms.
So, I’m going to be real with you. This is real life, a real home and a real family with real kids. I seldom put on make-up in the morning because I barely get 10 minutes to shower and dress without someone shouting “Mommy” or the baby crying, and I have my mother living with us to help me! I have no idea how other moms cope.
What I hope to achieve through this website and blog
There are a few things that I have really wanted to do. I want to write a book someday, and I would really like that book to help give women the skills they need to management their homes and families.
In the meantime, I have this site and blog. And my aim with Real Homemaking is to do the same thing. To help you develop the skills you need to manage your homes and families.
