Why Home Economics Still Matters
Home Economics is often dismissed as an outdated school subject, but at its heart it is something far more essential: the practical knowledge needed to care for a home and the people who live in it. These are not “1950s skills,” but life skills — necessary for anyone who lives in a household, at any stage of life.
While cooking and cleaning are part of it, Home Economics also includes budgeting, wise grocery shopping, home decorating, basic DIY and maintenance, childcare, gardening, and learning how to manage a household well. Together, these skills form the foundation of a stable and well-run home.
In a world where students can leave school excelling academically yet lack basic practical abilities, Home Economics remains deeply relevant. When these skills are no longer taught in schools, it becomes the responsibility of parents to pass them on — and of adults to intentionally learn them for themselves.
