Recipe: Cinnamon Rolls

Enjoy these classic, fluffy cinnamon buns, perfect for a cozy weekend morning. This simple, reliable recipe creates golden, sweet rolls with a tender crumb that your whole family will love.

Ingredients

Dough

  • 5 ½ cups flour
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 4 ½ tsp dry yeast
  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ cup water
  • 6 Tbsp margarine/butter
  • 2 eggs (beaten)

Filling

  • 6 Tbsp margarine/butter
  • 2 Tbsp Cinnamon
  • ½ Cup sugar

Icing

  • 2 cups icing sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 6 Tbsp milk *

* The milk can be substituted for coffee or any other flavouring of choice.

Method

Dough

  1. Mix flour, sugar, salt, and yeast in a bowl. Set aside.
  2. Combine milk, water, butter/margarine in a Pyrex jug or saucepan.
  3. Microwave or heat on a stove until butter/margarine is melted and the milk is warm (not boiling).
  4. Pour the milk mixture and eggs into the dry ingredients, and stir into a soft dough.
  5. Knead on a floured surface for 3 minutes. Place in a lightly greased bowl, cover and rest for 10 minutes.
  6. Split the dough into 2 portions (this makes it easier to work with).
  7. Roll each portion to approximately 35 by 20cm (14 by 10 inches).

Filling

  1. Spread the butter/margarine on the dough (like buttering bread).
  2. Mix the cinnamon and sugar. Sprinkle over the dough.
  3. Roll the dough tightly.
  4. Cut into slices approximately 2.5cm (1 inch) thick.
  5. Arrange in a lightly greased oven-proof casserole dish (I always use two Pyrex casserole dishes; I find they work better than a metal one).

Rise and Cook

  1. Cover the casserole dishes tightly with foil.
  2. Let the cinnamon buns rise in the oven on the lowest setting (50ºC / 120ºF) for 1 to 1½ hours. Alternatively, let them rise in a warm sunny place for the same amount of time.
  3. Bake at 190ºC / 375ºF for 25 to 30 minutes.

Icing

  1. Whisk the icing ingredients together.
  2. Drizzle over warm rolls.
